Meet Tamara
I'm Tamara Duker Freuman, a New York-based dietitian whose clinical practice focuses on the dietary management of digestive and metabolic diseases. While I work with patients who have a variety of health issues, my expertise is in helping identify the many possible causes of gas, bloating, diarrhea and constipation and helping patients achieve symptom control and improved quality of life. Because of this expertise, I've been called "The Bloated Belly Whisperer," and I like the name so much I've made it the title of my first book (order now). My second book, REGULAR, addresses the many causes of—and treatments for— bowel irregularity.
If you have a medical diagnosis already, I'll help you figure out what to eat so as to feel your best. If you don't yet have a medical diagnosis, I can often help you and your doctor home in on the most likely possibilities based on my reading of your symptoms as they relate to food choices and eating habits. It’s sort of like reading tea leaves, except that I use scientific thinking instead of clairvoyance and use poop rather than tea.
I tackle the delicate issues of digestive distress in a matter-of-fact, straightforward and reassuring way. My goal is to help people find the healthiest diet they can comfortably tolerate and enjoy; as such I resist dogmatic, one-size-fits-all eating philosophies. To this end, I’ve written hundreds of articles on U.S. News & World Report to reach hundreds of thousands of people each month with science-based, accessible and practical nutrition advice.
I earned my master’s degree in clinical nutrition from New York University and completed my training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. To balance out the glamour of a life spent talking about poop with both my patients and my twin children, I live in the suburbs, drive a minivan and occasionally eat peanut butter out of the jar.
